Trump: A Dictator
I have never been a fan of President Trump. I do not agree with the way he treats people or the way he has attacked so many different races and religions. President Trump has always had a very controversial relationship with the media. He has spoken many times about how he feels there is so much “fake news” in the world. Whether it be the number of people that attended his inauguration or something he did or did not say, President Trump seems to always find an organization to attack. Meanwhile, his own statements are riddled with an unprecedented amount of lies and misleading statements. We have seen a disappointing silence from the GOP establishment, with very few congressman breaking party lines. How can an ideologically conservative group of strict constitutionalists justify an attack on the First Amendment? It seems that Republicans see an opportunity to push through their own agendas while they have one of their own in the White House, regardless of his qualifications, temperament, or intentions.
However, in a note of encouragement, a prominent member of the same party as the sitting president openly attacked the way in which the president handles the media. This happened recently when during an interview, John McCain said that dictators, 'get started by suppressing free press'. Calling the president a dictator is not something to be taken lightly and it was not taken lightly by the people of this nation. Many feel that Trump trying to suppress the free press is the start of him become a dictator. The fact that McCain so openly attacked the man that represents his party is a new step for the Republican party. Only time will tell how united or divided this party will become but since Trump’s inauguration it has been a turbulent ride. It is impossible to tell whether we will see more silence and appeasement from those who seek to benefit from the chaos or Republican control of congress. If we take John McCain’s comments as promising omens, we may stay hopeful that some prominent politicians will start to turn against a man who does not represent conservative values nor hold the interests of the American people at heart.
